Town of Tonawanda-based energy company Noco has been tapped by Tops Markets to upgrade all of its interior and exterior lighting to the more energy-efficient LED format at 45 New York stores in the company's chain.

Once the conversion is complete, it's expected to save 16 million kilowatt hours, earning Tops $1.6 million in energy savings. The installation project began in February and is about halfway complete.

"If you run a business, there are always factors outside of your control, and rising electric prices are one of them, with no end in sight to continued rate increases," said Michael Casciano, president and chief operating officer at Noco.

Tops said it is "deeply committed" to sustainability and that the upgrades will help the grocer reduce its environmental footprint while enhancing the store experience. The company has been retrofitting its stores, parking lots and fuel station canopies to LED lighting since 2019. When the conversion is complete, it will have upgraded 121 stores.
